Programming Wireless Devices with Java(tm) 2 Micro Edition (J2ME(tm))
Abstract
Wireless devices such as cell phones are currently undergoing a
fundamental transformation. They are changing from voice-oriented
communication devices with relatively static, factory-encoded
functionality into extensible, Internet-enabled devices with advanced
software capabilities. These new devices will need to support dynamic
downloading of software, and need to be capable of running software
written not only by the device manufacturers but also third-party
software developers. This will make the devices much more dependent
on software, and will place a much higher emphasis on software
interoperability, security, and reliability.
This talk will summarize the recent advances in the development
of Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME), a platform targeted specifically
for the creation of third party applications for wireless devices.
A large number of wireless devices manufacturers and other companies,
including all the major cell phone manufacturers, have participated
in the J2ME standardization efforts. It has been estimated that
at least 60 million J2ME-enabled cell phones will be shipped
in 2002.
