BIO: Lars Bak received the MS degree in computer science from Aarhus
University in 1988. As one of the founders of Mjlner Informatics, he
participated in the design and implementation of the Beta Mjlner
System. In 1991, he joined the Self group at Sun Microsystems
Laboratories. Lars Bak was the technical lead of the HotSpot VM and is
still involved with virtual machines for the Java Platform.
since 1993.
The Need for Speed in Mobile Devices
Abstract As Java becomes the preferred software platform for developing
mobile applications, it is paramount that the underlying Java
implementation offers high performance yet low memory
consumption. Monty, a new project at Sun Microsystems, Inc.,
was formed to develop Java virtual machine technology to solve
this challenge.
This presentation previews the Monty technology that focuses
on high performance, low memory footprint, and hence low
battery consumption. Several novel techniques are used to
achieve this. A new object layout along with unified resource
management ensure that the memory footprint stays minimal. An
optimized interpreter and adaptive compiler provide high
performance without compromising memory usage. The technology
is compatible with the Connected, Limited Device Configuration
Specification (CLDC).
