Shane Caraveo, ActiveState
Shane is a hacker by heart, one foot in the world of dynamic languages, the other in more obscure efforts like writing debugger protocols or NPAPI plugins. He was a core developer for PHP, making major contributions such as the port to Windows, the SAPI architecture and early SOAP implementations. At ActiveState, he is the chief dragon-wrangler for Komodo, an IDE developed in XUL, JavaScript and Python, on top of the Mozilla code base. |

Abstract:
The next generation of technologies are targeting the desktop in a way never before possible. Network enabled applications interact with rich datasets provided on the web, using techniques and technologies common on most advanced websites; user interfaces will be static and dynamic, data will be local and remote, online/offline. How will this evolution happen and what does it mean for the web? Are you a web developer that knows dynamic HTML, JavaScript and CSS? You are 80% of the way to developing applications in XUL. I'll provide you the resources and knowledge to jump start your entry into XUL and give you directions on where to go for learning that last mile. I'll also cover the ups and downs of the XUL "platform" to help you decide whether it's the right technology for you. |
