Open Source and the Free Software Movement

[Previous: Practice and Methods | Next: Software Architecture]

Open Source is a growing phenomenon in computing. People are experimenting with it, working with it, evaluating it, both at home and in their jobs. Whole companies are basing their IT systems or strategies on it. Open Source comes in many shapes, with projects that range from the ideologically motivated to the pragmatically self-interested, but the bottom line is that it is possible to customize the product to your own needs. Unfortunately the success is threatened, with many Open Source projects already affected by software patents.

The reason for having this track at JAOO is to make Open Source visible. We have presentations by Open Source developers and users.

The first speaker on the track is Rix GroenBoom discussing how Open Source compares to proprietary software. As European support manager of Reasoning, Inc., the automated software inspection company, Rix has experience of large and complex open and closed source projects.
(Tuesday 10:45 - 11:30, Private Room)

In the track we also find Erich Gamma (of Pattern-book fame) telling us about his Open Source Java Development project, Eclipse.
(Tuesday 15:15 - 16:00, Conference Hall)

Another Open Source project, the object oriented scripting language Ruby, is explained by Yukihiro "Matz" Matsumoto.
(Wednesday 13:00 - 13:45, Tutorial Room)

In another track, the persistence track, we find Gavin King on Hibernate which is actually also Open Source. Another related theme is Michael Schwartzbach about his Open Source project: Xact, in the J2EE/.NET track.
(Monday 16:15 - 17:00, Public Room)
(Tuesday 14:00 - 14:45, Protected Room)
