 Mikael Vidstedt

Mikael Vidstedt is an architect and developer at the Adaptive Solutions Group at BEA. Mikael has been working with JVMs since 2000, and has previously been involved in code generation and optimization in the JRockit JVM.

The last two years he has been focusing on how to execute Java more effectively in virtualized environments by building OS-level features. He has a Master of Computer Science from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm and is based in Stockholm, Sweden.

Presentation: "LiquidVM - Better Resource Control and More Efficient Java in a Virtualized World"

Time: Monday 14:30 - 15:30

Location: To be announced

Abstract:

Running Java in a virtualized server environment on top of a hypervisor like VMware ESXserver, opens up for a broad range of new opportunities for the JVM in how it interacts with the underlying platform. Two years ago, BEA Systems started a research effort on how to get better resource control and run Java more efficiently (faster and smaller memory footprint) in a virtualized environment, by running Java directly on the hypervisor without a standard OS between.

This session will deep dive into the architecture of the small layer of software between the JVM and the hypervisor that has been built to make the JVM run without a standard OS. In addition, benchmark data will be presented and discussed showing the performance and footprint impact of this environment.
