Abstract:

JRuby is fast becoming the standard Ruby in large enterprises and Java organizations. JRuby on Rails runs multiple production sites and applications. JRuby with Swing is becoming a popular GUI development combination. Ruby has arrived on the Java platform!

In this session, we'll demonstrate several reasons why Ruby is such a great language on the JVM, calling Java libraries and integrating frameworks quickly and easily. We'll demonstrate bringing a JRuby on Rails application up on a Java webapp server and show how to call Java APIs from Rails. And we'll demonstrate the advanced capabilities of Ruby support in the NetBeans IDE.

Charles Nutter, Sun Microsystems

Charles Nutter

Charles Oliver Nutter is co-lead of the JRuby project, an implementation of Ruby 1.8 for the Java platform. He joined Sun Microsystems in September 2006 to work full-time on the project, coming from a Java EE architect position at a government services consulting company.

Charles has been primarily a Java developer for the past decade, with many other languages and technologies thrown in, but he now works to make Ruby and other dynamic languages first-class citizens in the Java world. He believes all developers would benefit from studying a dynamic language, and feels Ruby is the by far the best one to learn.

Charles plans to continue improving JRuby and to help advance support for alternative languages on the JVM. Charles blogs on Ruby and JRuby at headius.blogspot.com.

Thomas Enebo is co-lead of the JRuby project and he is also an employee of Sun Microsystems. Tom has been using Java for over a decade and Ruby over half a decade.

At Sun, he is working to make JRuby a piece of software that will capture the hearts and minds of Ruby and Java developers everywhere. Tom is also working to make Ruby a first-class citizen on the JVM.
