Enterprise Solutions Architect Brian  Oliver

Brian Oliver is an Enterprise Solutions Architect at Tanosol, working with leading Financial Institutions in the US and Europe to implement massively scalable and high-performance Data Grid solutions.

Over the past 8 years, Brian has been leading the development of large-scale multi-language and multi-currency Internet, E-Commerce, Betting and Financial Java-based systems. As an early adopter of Java in 1996, he has experienced almost every facet of Java development and deployment, from single servers to large scale clusters. He is an experienced technical and enterprise level architect with a ruthless focus on product engineering, delivery and success.

Recent posts include; Head of Technology at Aspect Capital (a London-based Systematic Hedge Fund managing in excess of $3.5b that purely utilizes Java for automated trade prediction and direct electronic execution), Technical Lead of the Trading Systems Group (also at Aspect) where he designed and built the core Trading Strategy Container (responsible for hosting trade prediction algorithms) and Product Lead at Betfair (world largest on-line Betting Exchange) where he lead the migration effort from Microsoft ASP to a massively clustered Java Application Stack (continuously handling in excess of 1 million trades per day).

Brian holds a First Class Honors Degree in Informatics and a University Medal from Griffith University (Australia) in areas of Object-Oriented and Declarative Programming Languages, Deductive Database Systems, Distributed Computing and Microelectronics.

Abstract: The terms "performance" and "scalability" can be found in requirements documents, marketing glossies and white papers throughout the IT industry. But what do they mean, really? How are they related? And how can you write software that meets your performance and scalability needs? Patrick Linskey will discuss these questions and their answers in general terms, and then focus on the primary source of performance and scalability woes in the J2EE environment: the database. You will learn how to define your requirements and design a system that meets them, and you will gain an understanding of the tradeoffs implied by those needs.
