Nati holds a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Coventry University, U.K

Presentation: "The End of Tier-Based Architecture"

Time: Tuesday 16:00 - 16:45

Location: To be announced

Abstract:

Most business applications are architected using a tier-based approach (presentation, business logic, data tier). The emergence of powerful and new commodity HW and introduction of SOA/Grid architectures touts the promise of achieving true linearly-scalable systems at a significantly lower cost. However, as we shall see in this presentation, these new platforms and architectures are not aligned with a tier-based approach which is by definition centralized and static.

During this presentation we will walkthrough a real-life case study of a financial application that was built using the tier-based architecture. We will see how using JavaSpaces technology we were able to demonstrate linear scalability without the need to re-architect the whole application.

We will explore the patterns used to achieve this goal and explore how it can be applied to other applications with similar requirements.

Presentation: "Scaling with Virtual Application Server Architectures"

Track:   Scalable Computing

Time: Wednesday 11:00 - 12:00

Location: Conference Hall

Abstract: Many business-critical applications in the financial and telecom industries need it all: 100% reliability, limitless scalability, low latency, sequencing and performance.

The majority of these applications is not based on J2EE model but rather utilizes a combination of homegrown solution and specialized low level middleware for high-speed messaging, caching and in-memory data bases.

New regulatory requirements, advancements in electronic trading, and increasing market data volumes are driving the processing

needs of these systems to the limit of what current architectures can provide. In other words - the cost of building such systems with current architectures becomes prohibitively high.

These factors lead many organizations in these industries to search for alternative architectures that would leverage the new enabling technologies available today such as low-cost HW units (Blades), high-speed networks (Infiniband) and distributed, memory-based storage.

In this presentation we will introduce a new approach for Application Grid that can bring the value of application servers on one hand and Grid on the other to these types of applications.

We will demonstrate how this type of architecture can scale dynamically over a pool of machines using a JavaSpaces cluster, distributed middleware (JMS, JDBC, DCache,..), and management and provisioning through Rio.
