Jeff Sutherland, Patient Keeper Inc.

Dr. Sutherland is a Certified ScrumMaster Practitioner and the inventor of the Scrum development process. He has been VP of Engineering and/or CTO for 9 software product companies, developing Scrum in 4 of them and introducing today's standard Scrum methodology to 5 of them.

As CTO of PatientKeeper and IDX, he used Scrum to capture industry leadership for mobile/wireless/web application platforms in healthcare, enabling physicians to enhance revenue, reduce cost, and improve patient care. Recently, he has evolved automated Scrum tools for real-time management reporting, while reducing Scrum project manager overhead to 10 minutes a day and developer administrative overhead to 1 minute a day. This is an order of magnitude more efficient than traditional approaches to project management.

In recent months, Dr. Sutherland has been a Scrum consultant to Microsoft, Yahoo, Ariba, Cadence, Adobe, GE Healthcare, and M3 Media Services bringing PatientKeeper Scrum practices to the broader software industry.

Abstract: The old, sequential approach to product development has become obsolete. Companies in Japan and the U.S. are using an "all-at-once" approach where the ball gets passed between team members moving up the field. Takeuchi and Nonaka noted the similarly of this process to rugby and called it Scrum. The origins and design of the first software development Scrums will be described along with the relationship of Scrum to current lean manufacturing techniques at Honda and Toyota.

Abstract: This tutorial will consist of three components. The first hour will describe the basics of Scrum, roles, processes, procedures and problems encountered at Microsoft, Ariba, Yahoo, Cadence, Adobe, GE and other companies based on recent consulting experience. The second hour will cover the artifacts of Scrum and how project 20 Guest Street, Brighton, MA 617-987-0300 2 of 7 management can be reduced to one minute per day for a developer and 10 minutes a day for a ScrumMaster. The third hour will cover scaling up Scrum where management reporting, automation, and coordination across teams become important. Participants will learn specific steps they must take to roll out Scrum in both small and large companies.
