Thomas Riisgaard Hansen

Thomas Riisgaard Hansen is a Ph D Student at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Aarhus, where he works with mobile and pervasive computing in the medical sector.

Thomas has been working on how to design technology with the users for more than six years and, for the last three years, he has been focusing on developing mobile and pervasive applications for the healthcare domain. Thomas has published several essays and papers about design for mobility and specific user contexts and is currently involved in several projects that investigate how to develop software for mobile workers.

Abstract:

Today several programming environments are competing on being the dominant platform for mobile devices. Java is one of the combatants and in this talk we will look at how Java is doing in this battle. Java has a strong advantage in being platform independent, but at the same time this is also a big drawback when Java has to run on mobile systems with different hardware support.

In the talk we will discuss pros and cons with Java for mobile systems and compare it to other programming environments for mobile systems. The talk will be based on concrete experience with developing projects for mobility.
